About Baker Communications ...

Baker Communications is owned by Donna L. Baker. It is my business equivalent and was started in 1999 when I left the corporate/public world to pursue full-time writing independently.

I have had the opportunity to write several Trade publication books per year since that time, as well as more than 60 full-length articles for online publication.

Recently my focus has begun to shift beyond books to include papers, articles, and other forms of communication. I particularly enjoy writing white papers, possibly because they are more than an article but less than a book, giving me the opportunity to dig deep for a short time and move on to another project.

Prior to venturing out on my own I worked as a consultant for a technical writing publisher and as a senior technical writer for a software company. I taught college for a few years, was a registered nurse for a number of years working in such diverse situations as a northern outpost and the operating rooms of a major tertiary care hospital, and ran my own company for a few years. It all started when I left home at the tender age of 18 and joined the Canadian Army.

My CV is available on request.

Personally Speaking ...

I'll soon be an artist with a studio. My husband says it's a garage with a workshop area, but if it makes me feel good to call it a studio, then go for it. It does.

I am Canadian, eh.

My family and I have lived in various locations, and recently settled on the shores of one of the largest lakes in the world, Lake Winnipeg. The lake is so extensive it has tides at certain times of the year.

My rural cottage-country setting is superbly bucolic. We have the privilege of protecting and watching dozens of species of birds, fish, and critters like muskrats and raccoons. Rush hour traffic takes on a whole new meaning, as you can see in the photo.

I have started into my next career as a sculptor and mosaicist. My preferred media include concrete, glass, water, and light. A recent piece is featured in a number of chapters and on the cover of CSS Design for Web Designers Only, published by Wiley in 2006.

Shiny bits of glass and tile are as attractive to me as to the neighborhood crows.
